Mary Anne Smallwood

As a lifelong nature lover, Mary Anne has engaged in many opportunities to enjoy the wonders of the
outdoors. Inspired by family and teachers she became a teacher/naturalist who particularly loves birds.
She attended The Ohio State University and received two Bachelor degrees: B.S. in Elementary
Education and B.S. in Environmental Education. Later, she received her M.S. in Educational Leadership
from St. Elizabeth University. Over the years as a classroom teacher she has taught grades one through
eight in four different states: Ohio, West Virginia, Florida and New Jersey. She taught many summer
camps for children at various nature centers, museums, and even a zoo. Summers also include
participating as a field assistant in her husband’s American Kestrel research. Now a retired teacher she is
very excited to start a new chapter of sharing her love of nature with the students and visitors at
beautiful and inspiring New Jersey School of Conservation.
