SUMMARY:The 2023 NJSOC Spring Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:It’s been a long winter and it’s time for some Spring Cleaning! We need lots of help to spruce things up. Can we count on you?\n\n\nJoin our work party as we make a clean sweep of NJSOC’s facilities and grounds to get everything ready for 2023 programming to begin. Some of the jobs we’ll be tackling include raking\, weedwhacking\, trail maintenance\, and gardening. We keep adding to the list! We’ll send registered participants an update and suggestions for tools it will be helpful to bring along shortly before the event. Bring a bag lunch and beverage for a well-deserved lunch break with your new\, hard-working friends! You supply the labor; we’ll supply the campfire and a chance to make new friends while performing valuable service to the SOC! \nDue to the nature of the work\, this event is best suited for adults and older teens. Nearly all our work will be outdoors; heavy rain will postpone the event to Sunday\, April 16th and you will be notified of the change via email. Don’t forget to check the email address you registered with!

SUMMARY:Rustic Bread Baking
DESCRIPTION:Explore a hands-on experience in bread baking in an outdoor\, wood fired oven!\n\n\nWarm homemade bread\, fresh out of the oven\, is a sumptuous culinary repast! Try this hands-on experience in rustic bread baking and you can learn how an outdoor wood fired oven works\, and bring home your own loaf to share (or not!). \nThis workshop begins by following a Rustic Yeasted Bread recipe that will be kneaded and coaxed into a loving loaf of bread that will be baked in an outdoor\, wood fired oven. During the rising time\, participants will collectively make a bakers’ snack. \nEvery baking experience in the outdoor oven is unique! Feeding the fire\, heating the interior of the oven high enough for quick bakers’ snack and stepping the temperature down for the bread baking has its challenges. We will share with you how it all works and keep our fingers crossed for a great bake day! \nThis workshop is open to individual adults\, couples\, and to children (ages 11 and up) with an adult partner. Each participant/pair will prepare and bake one loaf of bread to take home at the end of the session. \nPlease note: We will ask registered participants to bring an apron\, large mixing bowl\, 1-2 oven mitts\, a large\, clean dish towel\, zip lock bag\, and a large paper bag (to carry bread home). \nOptional\, but helpful: while a seasoned 8″” up to an 11″” cast iron skillet will be provided you may bring your own to bake in (no enamel). \nA little about your instructors: \nSusan\, is a licensed mental health counselor\, a former nutrition educator at family childcare homes\, and enjoyed demonstrating cooking and baking using a wood burning stove at an outdoor ethnic history museum. Robin\, a retired earth science teacher\, taught middle school students the art and science of bread baking. \nPLEASE NOTE: No pets are permitted on the NJSOC Campus. \nRefund Policy: \nYour event fee\, minus Eventbrite Fees\, is fully refundable if cancelled 7 or more days before the event. In the case of a multi-day event\, you must cancel 7 or more days before the first day of the event. No partial refunds are given if you cannot attend all days of the event. While we appreciate being notified if you are unable to attend an event\, refunds are not given for cancellations within 7 days of the event. \nFor events that are weather-dependent\, a raindate/reschedule date is included in the event description. We do not offer refunds if an event is rescheduled for the specified date. If we must cancel an event\, your registration fee\, including Eventbrite fees\, will be refunded. \n\n\nThe Friends of the New Jersey School of Conservation is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization. When NJSOC closed in July 2020\, the Friends launched a campaign to save it. This ultimately led to negotiations with the NJ Department of Environmental Protection\, owners of NJSOC\, to obtain an interim management agreement for the School. This agreement was finalized in April 2021\, and the Friends of NJSOC are proud to offer limited programming at NJSOC with the help of dedicated and talented volunteers. We are pleased to register you for one of our programs! \n\n\n\nWood-fired outdoor oven for bread baking.

SUMMARY:Integrating Native Plants into your Home Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Improve your local ecosystem with native plants! Some attractive and pollinator-friendly possibilities are within reach.\n\n\nJoin Master Gardener Barbara Rosenberg as she introduces you to the big impact of adding native plants to your gardens and lawns. What makes native plants natives? Why are they easier to care for? You will gain an understanding of their benefits for soil\, rainwater management\, pollinators and more. \nThis ecological learning event is for gardeners who want to be part of a conservation project empowering biodiversity one yard at a time. \nImagine…if each of us did one planter of native plants\, or one corner of our garden\, the impact would be enormous. We would be helping to re-create the “corridor” of connected properties that existed originally before buildings and roads. We would be part of a “homegrown national park” as suggested in Doug Tallamy’s book\, “Nature’s Best Hope”. \nThis event is for adults and families. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. SUMMARY:Voices from the Land: Integrating Language\, Landscape\, Art and Culture
DESCRIPTION:Teachers\, environmental educators & group leaders! Use nature\, creativity\, science & technology to foster appreciation of the environment.\n\n\nResearch reveals an ancient and intimate connection between language and landscape\, a connection that is found in cultures around the world. Within each person there is a gifted orator\, artist\, listener\, and performer. Exploring the natural world becomes a way for people to develop these gifts and celebrate their use. \nVoices from the Land uses the natural landscape as inspiration for students to explore the power of written and oral language\, digital photography\, performing arts\, online publishing… and the power of working collaboratively with other people. Through the Voices process\, students create ephemeral art using only what nature has to offer and write poetry based on their artwork. They then design and publish books and/or posters showcasing their art and poetry and share them with their school\, community\, and beyond. \nThis two-day workshop will guide you through the process in a hands-on way to ensure you have the skills and knowledge necessary to implement the program in your own classroom or educational setting. Voices from the Land projects have been implemented with preschool through secondary level students of average\, gifted\, or special needs\, in the United States\, Canada\, Mexico\, Turkey Spain\, Italy\, Poland\, Latvia\, Romania\, and New Zealand. \nThis is a two-day session (9am-3pm)\, rain or shine. Space is limited for this workshop\, and registration is required. Additional details are available on this flyer. Each participant will receive a Voices from the Land guide containing examples and instructional materials. Purchase orders from school districts are accepted. NJDEP does not currently permit overnight stays at the School of Conservation. Participants who need lodging can find options in nearby Newton\, or may be able to reserve a nearby campsite or lean-to in Stokes Stoke Forest (these book quickly for weekend nights\, so act fast!). \nRetired NJ educators and originators of “Voices from the Land”\, Erik and Kris Mollenhauer have conducted Voices projects across the US and several countries. In 2018\, Voices was recognized by the Virginia Master Naturalists as “Project of the Year” for its effectiveness. SUMMARY:Observing Nature: Inward and Outward
DESCRIPTION:An intuitive and exciting program to enhance participant’s lives with practical instruction on how to develop powers of observation.\n\n\n“Observing Nature: Inward and Outward” is created and led by Peter Del Vecchio\, a life coach\, environmentalist\, nature photographer\, and former yogic monk. \nIncorporating and interweaving his training and life experiences as both a keen observer of the natural world and yogic mindfulness guide\, Del Vecchio has designed this intuitive and exciting program to enhance participant’s lives with practical instruction on how to develop both internal and external awareness and conscious powers of observation. \nThe weekend’s activities are specifically designed to increase awareness of one’s own abilities of observation\, both internally (perceptions and feelings) and externally (increased awareness of the natural world which surrounds). The very concept of “observation” itself and how to strengthen one’s awareness and daily application form the core of the program. \nThe instructor-led activities will include simple\, yet powerful\, mindfulness techniques\, deep relaxation instruction\, nature observation walks (some silent)\, private journaling\, cell phone nature photography\, as well as fun “camp” activities\, such as a campfire with s’mores\, stories\, etc. \nThis program is designed for ages 12 to adult\, and no prior experience is required. This program will be limited to the first 20 participants in order to ensure the focus on individual guidance and the unique personal experience. \nThis is a two-day session (9am-9pm on Saturday\, and 9am-5pm on Sunday)\, rain or shine. Space is limited for this workshop\, and registration is required. The complete experience from Saturday am to Sunday pm is highly recommended\, but participants also have the option to purchase a single-day ticket for either Saturday or Sunday. The pricing reflects a discounted rate for the weekend ticket. \nNo food service is available at NJSOC. There will be plenty of space for you to store a cooler with your meals\, snacks\, and beverages for the day. We can recommend places to purchase food locally before you enter Stokes State Forest. \nAdditional details are available on this flyer. \nNJDEP does not currently permit overnight stays at the School of Conservation. SUMMARY:Stories\, A Stroll\, & Stars: A Night at SOC
DESCRIPTION:Fall is the perfect time for stories around the campfire. And that’s just the beginning!\n\n\nFall is the perfect time to gather around the campfire with friends for some not-too-scary stories. Popular storyteller Ken Karnas will be our featured speaker at this Night-Before-Halloween event. Throughout his 42-year teaching career\, Ken used stories to enhance every academic area he taught. In addition to using storytelling in the classroom\, Ken has shared his tales with audiences of all ages in libraries\, museums\, parks\, and now at NJSOC’s Piney Point fire circle. \nFollowing the storytelling\, you’re invited to join former Park Ranger and NJSOC Educator\, Tom Card\, for a not-at-all-scary night hike. Discover the beauty of Stokes State Forest by moonlight and learn about some of its residents who are active at night on this easy hike along a cleared path. \nOr\, if you prefer\, bring some marshmallows and hang out at the campfire\, or head over to the corral for some stargazing on your own. \nCome just for the campfire and stories (about 30-40 minutes)\, or stay longer and enjoy the SOC “nightlife”. It’s up to you! \nThis program is open to adults and families with children of any age. Registration is required. In case of inclement weather\, we’ll move the storytelling indoors and hike as planned as long as the rain isn’t heavy. \nIf you have any difficulty with the registration process\, please let us know so we can help!

SUMMARY:Teaching Climate Change in Science Classrooms\, Grades 6-12
DESCRIPTION:Ready or not… learn how (and why) to incorporate the new climate change standards in any science classroom… and have fun doing it!\n\n\nReady to teach climate change? This program is designed to support science teachers in grades 6-12 in incorporating the new climate change standards into your already-tight curricula. This workshop will help you understand how climate change occurs and the ways it affects society\, and individual members of society\, differently. We will explore phenomenon- and inquiry-based methods to meet New Jersey’s climate change standards using an interdisciplinary and participatory approach that reflects the pedagogies of inclusion and equity in formal and informal learning environments. Workshop activities will include climate change modeling\, an interpretive hike\, water quality assessment (by land and/or canoe)\, and analyzing and interpreting data. We’ll be working both indoors and outdoors (rain or shine) on the beautiful campus of the New Jersey School of Conservation. Whether you teach in a classroom or in an informal setting\, you will gain skills and strategies to enable you to address this important issue at a grade-appropriate level. Follow up support will be provided! \nYour instructors are Liz Carletta and Rae Cade. \n Liz is a formal and informal science educator. She has taught environmental/conservation education at Jenkinson’s Aquarium and the Bergen County Zoo\, as well as high school biology and forensic science in Newark\, NJ. Liz earned her MAT from Montclair State University (certified K-12 biology and students with disabilities teacher) and is currently pursuing a PhD in Teacher Education and Teacher Development. Her research interests include the partnerships between formal and informal educators and education\, teaching with an equity lens\, and science teacher retention. \nRae Cade is a doctoral student and teaching assistant at Montclair State University in the Environmental Science and Management department. She has a Bachelor’s degree from William Paterson University where she double majored in Earth Science and Anthropology and a Master’s degree in Sustainability Science from Montclair State University. While her thesis explored the beliefs and perceptions of climate change and sustainability amongst millennials who are non-environmental science majors\, her current research focuses on the interactions between water quality and environmental racism. \n\n\nThe Friends of the New Jersey School of Conservation is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization.
